This project pieces together a few records of a historical subculture that has been largely and intentionally left off the record — the bootlegging and speakeasy crowds of the Roaring Twenties. In the form of a walking tour, this piece discusses the scandalous / brave / lively / controversial / revolutionary stories behind existing and bygone artifacts embedded within in the everyday pedestrian landscape of Downtown San Francisco.
The process of sourcing information and imagery for this project involved white-gloved digs through the San Francisco History Center's archives and enlightening conversations with family. It's made in memory of Oreste Alberto Santucci, my great-grandfather and one of the greatest Bay Area bootleggers. Cin cin!
